Bazaar Warisan

The Bazaar Warisan is a pretty good example of the Terengganu approach to business.

The state is rich from oil, so they spare no expense building new things. Things like the Bazaar Warisan, hailed in their tourist brochures as a shopping destination in Terengganu.

What a nice looking building.

And at the top there's a great view of the sea.

One small problem. There aren't (m)any stores open.

I don't know if it's because merchants can't afford the rent, or what, but there's only one or two businesses in the whole giant building.

This is in striking contrast to the old market across the street. It's not fancy and a bit old, but there are lots of stores.

This seems to be the Terengganu approach to stimulus. Why cultivate what's working when you can build something new big and expensive?

And the second floor and jam packed with stores selling traditional Malay shirts and dresses.

And on the ground floor of the bazaar is a HUGE wet market. Here's small bit of it as seen from the second floor.

There's much much more to see in the wet market, but that'll have to wait for another day.

So doesn't this whole philosophy ( of just building a bigger new one) make you feel at home? :)
